3.3 Carved, Lidded Box with Gilt Details
DESCRIPTION:
Gilding is a process used to enhance less expensive metals with thin layers of gold or silver. Bring this ancient technique up to date by using a type of liquid precious metal ‘paint’ to embellish details of a carved, lidded box.
Create a lidded box that is at least one inch in diameter and ¾ inch deep (25 mm x 20 mm), and embellish it with a carved design. The box can be any shape – round, square, heart, etc. Decoration can cover both the lid and sides or can be limited to a visually significant portion of either one.
After firing, enhance it with gilt details. Type of carving tools used, and design motifs are up to the Participant. Gold used on sintered silver can be slip made from lump gold clay, Accent Gold (AGS), or Cool Tools Painting Powder. Participants working with base metal may use Accent Silver.
