Challenge Details
DESCRIPTION:
Research and use openwork to create a pendant that is at least 1.5 inches/4 cm on its longest side. This design style produces decoration by creating ‘openings’ or ‘voids’ that pierce through the entire thickness of a given material – in this case unfired metal clay. Some examples of openwork are lace, filigree, and decorative iron gates. The open areas may be created with almost any method(s) or tools you want to use with the exception of commercially manufactured textures, templates, or molds). You may use lump clay to roll thin snakes to replicate filigree, cut shapes through a slab, lay out and join narrow strips to form the design, or use any other technique to create the open areas. Although the completed work might appear to be lightweight or delicate, it must be substantial enough to survive the perils of everyday wear. Choice of clay will be an important component to take into consideration. If you designed and made a custom texture or template to facilitate the process, the information request form will ask for a photo of it.
